Real life/family )

[livejournal.com profile] imaginarybeasts could use more Regency romance stories! There's still time until the end of this month. Neither have we found a cover artist, if that's more up your alley.

What I'm reading
The Twelve, second in Justin Cronin's vampire apocalypse trilogy. Have been compared to Stephen King's The Stand, with more major characters who are not white, men, or both. It actually should have been The Thirteen (twelve first vampires/Virals + strongest dude called Zero) but I agree that sounds less dramatic.
ETA because I can't count: There are twelve of them. The 13th test subject was a girl who developed a different variant during the experiment. She's as strong as any of the twelve so it's kind of a stalemate right now.

What I've just finished
JKT48's first official guidebook (totally counts as a book). My copy is signed by Melody, with a bonus picture of her, all thanks to [personal profile] silverwind.

What I'll read next
Her Sunny Side by Koshigaya Osamu or a thriller novel by a new Indonesian writer.

Currently reading Alma Katsu's The Taker - has anyone? I picked it up on a whim.

Indonesia is going to have its own tokusatsu series, Bima Satria Garuda. Excited!

Today I went to a talk show, as they term it, on creative writing. Tall and scary, that's me )

Personal )

Iron Man 3: Remember how Black Widow stole the second movie? Guess who nearly stole the third one. Well, for only like seven minutes in total, but there's plenty of awesomeness there too.
The audience seemed to find the villain's henchpeople not unlike horror movie spooks. This amused me.
I'm glad Andy Lau turned down the role as the Mandarin. The character itself is obviously intended a caricature but managed to be offensive anyway.
(Plot is too simple to merit any summary. And too many "LOL Hollywood" moments)

I bought the first volume of the Kuroko no Basket manga simply because it was there on the bookstore. orz To my surprise, I enjoyed it more than the anime. The comical scenes work better.

1. [personal profile] artillie reintroduced me to A.S. Byatt. Words that evoke heady visceral reactions are the kind that I'd like to write easily, and don't. (They were useful in my drabble days, too)

2. Speaking of writing: Don't go to workshops expecting praise for your writing. I feel what the post says about wanting validation.

3. There's a saying in wuxia that a hero is surrounded by beautiful women. (Which is a topic for another day) Liang Yusheng seems to think that a heroine tends to be surrounded by men whose personalities aren't as forceful as hers, and, sometimes, whose martial skills aren't as flawless. And said men do often admire the heroine for being knowledgeable, experienced, etc.

4. Thanks to spammers and more than 100 comments on my domain blog per day, Wordpress deleted previous comments, and no one can leave new comments either. The AddThis widget has also gone missing. I'm thinking of uninstalling Wordpress and start everything anew. Unless my dwcircle has a better suggestion? Tried signing up for Akismet but it won't get past the sign-up page.

5. RL-ish. And some silliness )

. Jakarta: Is being hit by a massive flood again, and the governor declared an emergency until the 27th. It's been raining nonstop in Bogor too and my bedroom ceiling leaked. Otherwise everything in the house is as before.

. DemiGods SemiDevils 2013: After fandom eyerolled at a Super Junior guy getting a lead role, their interest and mine peaked again when the HSDS 2003 trio, Alec Su, Alyssa Chia, and Gao Yuanyuan joined the cast. I am charmed at how the two ladies look so BFF-y in the behind the scene vid. #priorities
Zhong Ling's actress is v. cute [ x ], and Kang Min's is smoking hot [ x ]. That's wuxia all right, pretty ladies wherever you turn.

. Bleach 523: Badass. But knowing Kubo's usual treatment of the women...

Manga-related:
. TeniPuri/TeniMyu fans, check out these PVs (gifset Tumblr posts):
Hyoutei
Rikkai
Then these:
Rudolph and Yamabuki
They sure know whose fanbases are bigger.
. One thing I noticed about shounen anime/manga characters with dead people in their past: If it's a man, having a dead woman in his past often ~motivates~ him to reach greater heights. If it's a woman, having a dead man in her past usually influences her present only a little - the attitude in general is, "He had to die/was dying anyway because - ." In other words: Don't you mind those dead boys, girls, just get stronger on your own.

RL:
Dropped one of the computer's speakers while I was cleaning the desk and fixed it with sellotape. Just one of those morning with extra surprises.

Writing:
100k in 100 days is a writing event taking place from January 1 to April 10, 2013, where participants write 100k words in thsoe 100 days. It's a Facebook (yeah, I know) group, and the default setting is being notified by e-mail every time someone posts on the group's wall.

Went straight from one doctor to another, obtained sick leaves. Grabbed three novels on the way home, one of which I've finished reading.

It seems Kubo Tite is sick so no Bleach chapter this week? Get well soon, man.

1. My niece was born on Wednesday. I haven't seen her yet, because she was born 180 kms away.
Earthquakes hit the western part of Sumatra on the same day. No casualties were reported, thankfully.
ETA: Casualties, mostly due to heart attacks, have been reported.

2. Kekkaishi: I wasn't going to continue buying the manga after the Kokubourou arc. But the cover of vol. 14 has such pretty colors. *is a simple person* And the box arc has Misao and her adorable power.

3. A needs must post, where you can share what you need and maybe help those who are in need of something.

4. This DW account is three years old today and this is the 555th entry. *hands out mugs of apple juice*

Big beautiful rainbow: *appears over the eastern horizon*
Eve: Must take picture! *aims cell phone at rainbow, clicks*
Cell phone: *records instead of takes picture*
Eve: Nonono, I don't want a vid, where's the camera button, wait -
Rainbow: *fades away*
Eve: :(

First poster of The Wolverine: *is announced*
Reaction 1: So he's in Japan, like in the anime?
Reaction 2: Why is he clawing at the Hinomaru? Is that supposed to be kewl?
yifu: (// scremies @ lj)

1. Forgot to mention this: on Saturday, just as I was leaving the house, I saw several men carrying a small, live crocodile. They probably caught it at a nearby stream. But where did it come from? I have no idea what they did with it, either. Moral: Life is all about loose threads.

2. Bleach 483: Hm. )

3. British government announces new visa for visiting writers and artists.

3. On Lucy Liu as Watson: Now I'm thinking Eva Huang as Sherlock. She'd pull the standoffish look superbly.
Anyway, it seems this version's Watson is not an ex-army doctor? (I admit that I've always been uncomfortable that a war with brown people is used rather conveniently to build a white character's background) We'll have, instead, a doctor who's lost her license. Does she treat patients illegally, or...? That's sort of reminiscent of Tenma from Urasawa Naoki's Monster. /my mind likes tangents okay
